- Toor dal - 3 cups
- Refined oil - 3 table spoon
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin - 2 teaspoon
- Red chili - 1 no.
- Curry leaf - 2 spring
- Garlic - 4 clove
- Onion - 1 medium sized
- Green chili - 2 no.
- Tomato - 1 no.
- Chili powder - 2 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - teaspoon
- Salt - for taste
- Coriander leaf - 3-4 spring
- Asafoetida (optional) - a pinch
- Butter or ghee - 1 spoon
- Wash and soak dal
- Chop garlic, onion and tomato
- Slit green chilies
- Boil dal with little chunks onion, tomato, green chili and a clove of garlic
- In another pan, heat oil,
- Temper mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves, red chili by adding one by one
- Add garlic and saute until it turns mild brown
- Add onion and saute until it start to turn brown
- Add turmeric and chili powder
- Add tomato and cook
- Add the tempered mixture to boiled dal and heat for 3-4 minutes
- Add salt and check for taste
- Finish with a pinch of asafoetida, chopped coriander leaves and ghee/butter
Notes
- Avoid adding turmeric powder or salt during initial stage of boiling dal, which may prolong boiling time
- Its good if you could allow the dal to boil until mashy consistency; however if you are in hurry or wish to save time, run dal in a mixie or blender once 80% cooked & continue cooking
- Replace toor dal with split moong dal
